Interesting concept as I have used i3wm a lot on mac hardware as well and do miss that 3-finger swipe. I wouldn't think u need the "whole-window" parameter though - bindsym should work regardless. I can't test this at the moment, but have u tried
focus_follows_mouse no to see if it has an affect?
